Bicyclist left in critical condition after crash with car

On behalf of Law Office of Matthew Vance, P.C. posted in Pedestrian Accidents on Monday, July 2, 2012

A serious accident has left a 38-year-old cyclist in critical condition. According to officials, the pedestrian accident involved the 38-year-old woman and a 21-year-old female driver. The crash occurred in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico, around 10 a.m. earlier this month. Authorities said that the driver suffered from a medical episode, which caused the accident.

Police said that the 38-year-old woman was riding her bicycle when she was hit by an oncoming car on East Alameda Street at Delgado Street. The 21-year-old driver of the vehicle, a silver 2004 Volvo sedan, was traveling westbound on East Alameda Street when her medical episode occurred. She crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the 38-year-old woman. After colliding with the bicyclist, the car continued across the road and hit a parked car.

The driver's speed is unknown, but authorities believe that she was not speeding at the time of the crash. The scene was shut down for a couple hours while authorities investigated the crash. The investigation is ongoing. No criminal charges or traffic citations have been issued against the driver because the cause of the accident was a medical issue.

Authorities were not sure if the woman had experienced similar medical emergencies prior to the crash. The 21-year-old was taken to the hospital, examined, and released as she did not suffer any serious injuries. Unlike the driver, the 38-year-old bicyclist did sustain serious injuries. She was transported to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center and was listed in critical condition. She was reported to be in a stable state but was being treated in the intensive care unit.

There are many unanswered questions concerning this crash. As in many pedestrian accidents, injured parties do not always know where to turn for assistance. Though operator error may not have been a cause, the injuries suffered by the pedestrian nevertheless were severe.

The advice and counsel of an experienced personal injury attorney may help such an individual in seeking compensation for what did occur. Such counsel can make a determination if the driver should not have even been behind the wheel. Such counsel can also work with insurance companies to help injured parties at least be somewhat compensated for what occurred.
